While researching, I stumbled across this article featured in The New York Times 'Opinion Pages'. Not only was I confronted by the stories, but I was also confronted by the horrific truths.
Some of the personal accounts are unimaginable. I was left feeling utterly furious, and was astounded by the actions against the LGBT community. I understand that human rights are not exactly universally recognised and understood; however, for individuals to be discriminated against to this extent, or any extent as a matter of fact, is beyond belief. The atrocities committed against the extensive and growing homosexual community are profound. Even from the young age of 12, individuals are experiencing abuse and hate crimes perpetrated against them on the basis of their sexual orientation alone. In the context and extent of this situation, it is startling that individuals are not accepted by their families due to their countries prevailing system of values. I understand the differing ideologies and concepts, and without my Westernised head screwed on, I still believe every human has the right to not only be true to themselves, but to society. To no longer hide in fear of hate and discrimination.
The homosexual community are omitted from human rights on the basis of their sexual orientation; however, they're still human. Therefore, it is time for the UDHR to evolve and include the LGBT community. They need to be recognised as a group of individuals who inherently deserve their rights. In a progressive society we should be able to accept individuals for who they are, and recognise that they are humans too.
